The name “apatite” is derived from the Greek word “apatáo,” meaning “to deceive,” and was coined in 1786 by the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749–1817). Since apatite has localities in numerous different forms and colors, there is a high risk of confusing it with another mineral. Spellings such as Apartith, Apathit, Apatith, Appatit, or Apatiet are incorrect.
